As a family, we like to be thrifty but after an unhappy incident in Wales, one thing we don’t compromise on is Car Breakdown Insurance
We were visiting my friend in Wales for a fortnight to introduce her to my new baby. She is a nun in an enclosed order so we stayed in the cottage in the grounds and saw her for around 40 minutes every day.
The rest of the time we were proper tourists going to the coast and exploring the countryside.
One afternoon about three days before the end of the holiday, we broke down in the car.
We had no breakdown cover and worse as it was just before payday, we did not have the means to access help of any sort. We felt stupid and down-hearted but sometimes you just foolishly believe your luck will hold.
That is not wise particularly if you have a young family. We felt stranded and had to do some very fancy footwork to get home involving taking out a loan and a very stressful and costly recovery.
We all have car insurance (according to law) which covers at least the third party in the unfortunate event of an accident. What it doesn’t cover is the hassle and inconvenience of a mechanical breakdown. Not all of us have the competence to carry out a quick repair at the side of the road or, worse still, deal with the cost of a recovery to a garage from the hard shoulder of a motorway.
The best way to cover yourself against these eventualities is to take out breakdown cover.
The incident in Wales happened 8 years ago but we have never being without breakdown cover since.
