He loved the sea – #SnapHappyBritMums

When I saw today’s theme for #SnapHappyBritMums, this photo came immediately to my mind.

Dad had a deep love of the sea. It started when he heard tales of the Navy from a family member as a child. He joined the Sea Cadets and signed up for the Royal Navy as soon as he was able to do serving during and after World War Two.

I suppose I have always loved the sea and that is probably down to Dad being in my life.

When I seek meaning or comfort, I like to go to the sea and stare out at the horizon.

As a child and teenager, weekends were spent by the coast on day trips or later in our caravan.

It is my dream to live by the sea one day.

When Dad died, I found myself buying an ornament of an anchor to represent him somehow. It is on my mantelpiece so firmly in view.

I have loads of photographs of Dad by the sea and lots of boats that he took. He used to drive Mum mad with that always snapping boats and aeroplanes.

This photograph was taken during my last Christmas with Dad. We had spied the Captain’s Quarters in a charity shop and thought it was ideal in our scenario where Dad had his own private part of the house. He loved it and pinned it on his door immediately. It said so much about his place in our lives.

Most of all, I love Dad’s smile in this picture. He was a man of great humour and it was only after his death that I realised just how often my Dad smiled. That is a life well lived.

To mark his 6th month anniversary, we will go on a boat trip I hope and throw our flowers in the sea.

“Hail, Queen of heaven, the ocean star,
Guide of the wanderer here below,
Thrown on life’s surge, we claim thy care,
Save us from peril and from woe.

Mother of Christ, Star of the sea
Pray for the wanderer, pray for me.”

You really do look alike! What a smile – so full of fun. I love that you have an anchor, in more ways than one – it sounds like he left you some strong anchors too when the seas of life are choppy xx I am so pleased to see him at long last, I have read and heard so much about him.
