Beef and pepper kebabs with Cypriot New Potatoes

The arrival of Cypriot New Potatoes

I hope you will try this original recipe of Beef and pepper kebabs or souvlakia (you say souvlaki and I say kebab) made extra special with Cypriot New Potatoes.

New potato season has come early at Tesco, with the arrival of Cypriot New Potatoes.

The benefits of Cypriot New Potatoes

Fresh from the sun-soaked island of Cyprus, these new potatoes are the ‘spunta’ variety and are extremely versatile. Available in 750g packs or loose, Tesco Cypriot New Potatoes are ideal for boiling or steaming, roasting and even baked. What’s more, they don’t need to be peeled, so preparation is minimal – just a quick wash in cold water.

The distinctive rich, creamy yet earthy taste of their yellow flesh is thanks to the mineral-rich, red alluvial soil in which the potatoes are grown and harvested, using traditional methods on small family farms. Freshly dug every day, the d elicious fresh taste of Tesco Cypriot New Potatoes can be enjoyed even on dark and cold winter days.

Cypriot New Potatoes are available in Tesco stores from now until the end of March so I decided to put them to good use in a recipe that can be served indoors or outside once Spring shows up.

Cypriot and Yorkshire fusion

I think of potatoes and I think of roast dinner. I think of Cyprus and I think of kebabs. I wondered if I could combine the two in a fun dish that would make a nice centre piece and not be too daunting for little ones to try.

Cypriot New Potatoes, beef and pepper kebabs.

Preparation time

30 mins to 1 hour

Cooking time

10 to 30 mins

Serves 4

400g/14oz beef – we used ready cubed beef from Tesco
Tesco Cypriot potatoes par-boiled
1 red pepper, cored and deseeded
1 green pepper, cored and deseeded
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 tbsp lime juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. We used metal skewers but if you are using wooden ones, wet with warm water.

2.Cut the peppers into 2.5cm/1in cubes. Wash the potatoes and cut into chunks. Keep the skin on  for its fibre content and great taste. Par-boil your potatoes and sear your beef.

3. You may wish to mix your favourite herbs or spices in vegetable oil and marinate the beef and pepper cubes in this mixture in the fridge for a hour.

4.Preheat the grill to a hot setting. Thread the beef, potatoes and peppers on to the skewers. Place the beef skewers on a foil lined tray and grill for 15 minutes, turning often and basting with the juices.

5.Place the kebabs in giant Tesco Yorkshire puddings and add Tesco’s finest gravy.

With Spring just around the corner, these kebabs can also be cooked on a charcoal barbecue. They are super-simple to make, look the part and certainly deliver on taste.

This is a versatile recipe where you can use your meat of choice and Quorn would make a great vegetarian  option and work just as well. Tuna could also work well.

In  fact, the best thing about this recipe is that every member of the family can thread their own kebab to their own design and I do like to ensure everyone gets into the kitchen.
