How to Get Fit with Your Dog

One of the benefits of getting a dog is that you are likely to see an improvement in your stress levels, as well as your general health and wellbeing. Owning a dog has been proven to reduce symptoms of depression, lower blood pressure, and even result in healthy weight loss. Here is how to get fit with your dog.

Find a form of exercise that works for both of you

While most dog owners will reap the rewards of fitness and weight loss by simply taking their new furry companion out on regular walks, this type of exercise doesn’t work for everyone. If your dog suffers from joint problems or they are nearing their golden years, remember to visit a great vet, like, for advice if you are unsure whether or not your dog should be exercising intensely.

If you simply aren’t a fan of running or walking, taking up swimming with them or throwing a Frisbee around at the park is sure to be just as good when it comes to getting that heart rate up and breaking a sweat.

Change your diets

Did you know that around 55% of all dogs are overweight? If both you and your pooch have put on a few extra pounds over the last few years, it is important to change your diets in conjunction with getting plenty of exercise if you are to see noticeable results. You should switch to whole foods and avoid overindulging in anything processed. As for your dog, the first step is to stop feeding him table scraps. From there, you may also want to review his portion sizes, as well as ensure that his food is the right choice for him at his current stage of life. For example, senior dogs require a lower calorie, higher protein diet than more active adult dogs.

Be dedicated

Once you have selected a great exercise and diet plan for the both of you, the only way that you are going to maximize your fitness and lose some weight is to keep it up. Do your best to avoid temptation and to continue motivating yourself to continue. That goes for your dog too. He is sure to flash those sad puppy dog eyes at you every time you tuck into a good meal or try to convince you that lying on the couch is much more pleasant than heading out for a brisk jog. Stay strong and carry on!

Enjoy it

The wonderful part about getting fit with your dog is that it doesn’t feel like work. It will always be a fun time when you have your best friend by your side. As such, do your best to enjoy every moment of your fitness journey together and you will find that it is that much easier to stick it out and to continue to reap the many benefits.

Here’s to improved health, enhanced fitness, and an overall boost in your general happiness. Dogs tend to have that effect.
