The fashion world has been pretty confusing over the last few years, with the COVID-19 pandemic seeing individuals stay at home more than ever. Not only did the pandemic change the way you work, the way you shop, and how you socialise, but it also impacted the way that you dress. Some experts say that the pandemic redefined the fashion industry, while others say it just went blank. There was no longer a need for fashionable clothes for a night out on the town, or smart business wear for a day in the office. Instead, the world turned to loungewear, activewear and cosy alternatives that could be worn around the house.

Since the pandemic, the way you dress and the way you shop would have changed. It may still feel a little uncertain, after spending so long in comfortable clothing that you would only be seen at home around your family. The lockdown has also provided a lack of social feedback, that you would usually obtain when you style your outfits before heading out or to the office. This has given people time to focus on how their clothes feel, as opposed to focusing solely on aesthetic appeal and external validation, which has led to comfort being put above all else. This is going to be a hard shift back into the world, which could explain why skinny jeans are out, and new styles are in.

Trends may seem confusing at first because there are so many to keep up with. This is because individuals are buying clothes to make up for lost time, and experimenting with different styles to explore their creativity and develop individual tastes. Comfort is going to remain largely at the heart of the trends in 2022, with outfits for days at the office being more functional and even more casual in some industries.

Learning about fashion is a great way to learn about yourself, boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Fashion is a great way to get creative and produce your own style that you love, and feel comfortable in. Learning about the latest fashion trends for 2022 can save you time, help you keep up with the modern world, and provide you with inspiration to style your outfits. You can add your own twist to the top trends, and make them your own.

Before you buy new clothes

There is no better time than now, to learn about the latest trends and re-evaluate your wardrobe. Before you buy new clothes, it is a great idea to review your current wardrobe, and declutter. Get rid of anything that you don’t like, or don’t wear anymore. If they are in good condition, you should consider donating them to charity. If they are seasonal items of clothing, simply pack them away and save them for next year. You never know when items are going to come back in style!

Make sure you keep any neutral colours, as they are great for base layers that you can dress up. You can also see what items of clothing you can repurpose into something new.

You should also check your sizing before buying new clothes. With limited shopping during the lockdown, your body size or shape may have changed. Checking your size before spending money will save you the hassle of having to take items back to the store. The sizes in shops may also vary, so if you know your measurements, then you will be able to make more accurate purchases.

Add your own spin

Fashion trends are great for inspiration and should be just that. You don’t have to try and replicate the exact outfits that you see on the runway. Instead, you should use them as inspiration, to create your own version of the outfit. Take the styles, colours, and all the elements of the trends that you love, and adapt them to suit your personal style. You should also consider your body shape when styling your outfits. Everybody is unique, and clothes are going to look very different for different people. Take this into consideration when purchasing clothes and check first to see if you have a triangle, hourglass, oval, or diamond shaped body. For example, if you have an hourglass body shape, you may prefer to wear minimalist clothing and opt for tunic tops and other similar styles of clothing. In comparison, if you have a triangle body shape, you may prefer to wear v necklines, which are flattering for that particular body shape. This will help you to create your own style while feeling good and confident in your ensembles.

Top fashion trends of 2022

Straight from the runway, here are some of the top fashion trends of 2022.

#1 Bright colours

The runway is seeing an explosion of colours in 2022. Models have been seen wearing bold hues from head to toe, including their bags and shoes. The bright colours are a great way to lift your mood, make a bold statement, and dress for any occasion. Neutral and tan colours were huge last year, but this year it appears the industry has gone to the other extreme.

#2 Miniskirts

Mini skirts have made a huge comeback. An extremely popular item of clothing in the 1960s, mini skirts are on the rise again. They were named one of fashion’s most daring changes to the hemline, but the trend was so popular it continued into the 1970s and is now back again in 2022. Mini skirts can seem quite extreme at first, with a lot more leg on show then you are used to, but they look fabulous.

#3 Midi skirts

If mini skirts just aren’t for you, then, fortunately, midi skirts have also come back into style. Midi skirts were a popular item of clothing in the 1940s and then battled against the mini skirt in the 1970s. Midi skirts are known for their elegance and grace. They are beautiful pieces of clothing that look effortlessly chic. They are also great for any body shape, and any leg size.

#4 Sequins

Sequins are not just for discos. Instead, they have been turned into an everyday essential in 2022 by the fashion industry. Top designers such as Valentino and Chanel are adding them to a range of clothing, to introduce a little shimmer and sparkle. Clothing with sequins makes a great statement and does all the talking for you. The most popular items covered in sequins are blazers, slip dresses and wide-leg trousers. Designers have warned that if you are wearing a sequined outfit, be careful not to overdo it. Choose basic accessories to pair it with, to ensure your sequins remain the centre of attention.

#5 Tassels

Tassels and other fringe details date back to Roman and Egyptian times. The Romans incorporated them onto clothing because they believed Christians should be properly clothed. The Egyptians wore them on their headdresses to ward off evil spirits.

Fringe clothing reappeared as part of the flapper’s fashion in the 1920s, and then came in and out of fashion in the 1960s, 70s, and 90s. Tassels are flattering for any body shape, and are extremely easy to wear. They provide a bohemian feel to any ensemble and are great when paired with loose beach-type clothing and chunky sandals. The most popular items of clothing on the runway with tassels are crochet tops and maxi dresses.

#6 Cutouts

The catwalk is flaunting clothing with funky shapes, known as cutouts. These are normal items of clothing, with a unique twist. Tops and dresses are cut in a variety of ways, such as a slash, an open back, keyhole details, cold-shoulders, circles, and much more.

The idea behind this trend is to highlight your features, make a statement, and offer more movement in the fabric. This trend is brand new, which can make it feel a little daunting at first, especially if you are not used to showing a lot of flesh. It can also feel strange knowing that a huge section of your clothes has just been cut out. There are a variety of styles to choose from, so you can start small and work your way up.

This trend is extremely popular, and the styles on the catwalk are gorgeous.

#7 Trapeze dresses

Trapeze dresses are giant dresses in bright colours and bold patterns, that effortlessly drape over your body. The silhouette is both flattering and comfortable. The dress can be worn all year round, but with linen fabric, can be a great summer ensemble to stay stylish, while keeping nice and cool. It makes a huge statement on its own and does not need to be paired with any other jewellery or accessories. Trapeze dresses cover a lot more skin than the cutouts, which makes for a great alternative if cutouts just are not your thing. You can purchase a full trapeze dress, or opt for an a-line skirt, which has the same effect, but is a little more fitted at the waist and needs to be paired with an appropriate top.

The fashion trends for 2022 are a lot bolder and more creative than the previous years. Find what trends you like, and start creating your own ensembles.
