A makeover for a small bedroom
I have a very small bedroom in my new home. It could probably be described as a generous box room. I moved into this house following a relationship breakdown so wasn’t really in the headspace to carry out home improvements. It’s interesting that now that I feel better, I have started to jazz up the house beginning with my room. Here are some of my tips for a makeover for a small bedroom.
A makeover for a small bedroom
My first tip as with anything that might cost money is to set a firm budget from the start. It’s so easy to get carried away but when you are spending, try and work out whether the item you are spending on will bring you long term pleasure. Is your investment worth it? The only person who can answer this is you as the individual you are. We all have different levels of money available and it is possible to do bedroom makeovers for barely any money or to splash the cash.
Start with a great bed frame
Beds are the focal point of our bedrooms so I find starting with a great bed frame is sensible. Now that I am a little older and can experience back pain, I am sensible and put money aside for a decent bed frame that will guarantee me a comfortable night’s sleep. Gone are the days when I would buy a second-hand bed and hope for the best. I chose a cream bed frame as I felt that lighter colours were best for such a tiny room. It is metal and came in a bargain price in the sale with a generous £50 discount. It has space under the bed which is perfect as storage space is at a premium. It has antique style brass finials which give it a retro feel. To save money, I used my old mattress as it was still in decent condition.
Choose light bedding and window dressings
Once I had my bed sorted, it was time to have fun choosing bedding. I have always loved hotel stays with crisp white cotton sheets. Over the years, I have had all sorts of styles when it comes to bedding from florals to patchwork and so much more. I suddenly realised that it would make sense to rock a hotel look when it comes to sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers. The white and cream colours I have chosen make my small bedroom look so much bigger. A cream embossed bedspread which I picked up for six pounds in a local charity shop works wonders giving my bedroom a really peaceful feel. I am spending more time in it reading and enjoying a space I only slept in before. I have replaced dark purple curtains with just one cream embossed curtain that I can pull to one side to allow the sunshine into my room. It really lifts my mood.
Select fun accessories
My Dad was in the Navy which led to me having a real love of the sea. I am happiest when by water and love the nautical look when it comes to fashion. I found some nautical cushions in a homewares store in town for just seven pounds. I am trying to decide which to add to my room as I have options from lighthouses to beach huts to puffins. I don’t want to inject too much colour as I like the serene look. I am looking forward to experimenting until I get the look just right.
It’s time to paint the walls
Three of my bedroom walls are painted magnolia which I find makes the room characterless. The other is painted a really dark grey which is crazy as it just makes the room look even smaller. I can’t make my mind up what to choose colour wise. I think I will paint 3 walls white and am undecided between pale lemon, blue or green for the feature wall. I have taken down the dark canvas I had on the wall and have replaced with am image in a white frame. I may buy a white wooden framed mirror. Canvases appeal but do I go for a cloudscape, mountains or sea? It’s fun to see what is available online.
Making over a bedroom seems such a little thing and yet it has completely transformed my mood. It brings out my creativity and feels like I am investing in my own comfort. As a single parent, it can often feel that I am focused on my children’s needs all the time. We all need to practise a little self-care and building my own sanctuary in my funky box room has really contributed to that.
