3 Reasons To Be Mindful about the Images and Information You Take In on a Daily Basis

Everyone knows that it’s important to be thoughtful about the food you consume, how physically active versus sedentary you are, and other things directly connected with health in a strictly physical sense.

But, if you look at the website of any good therapy retreat, one common aesthetic theme you will identify is that the environment appears to be structured to provide as much harmonious stimuli as possible, and as little jarring or distracting stimuli as possible

In other words, you should also be very mindful about the images and the information you “feed” yourself on a daily basis, as far as your well-being is concerned. Here are a few reasons why.


  • Because images and tropes that you are repeatedly exposed to will embed himself in your subconscious mind and have an effect, one way or the other



The writer Jerry Mander makes a compelling case in his book, “Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television,” that the goal of an advertiser is not to “convince” anyone – contrary to the beliefs of the people who are being advertised to.

Instead, Mander argues – on the basis of his experience as a former long-time advertising exec – that the real goal of advertising is simply to implant an image in the subconscious mind the people who see it. And this is almost always successful.

If someone says the words “Energizer Bunny” to you, the image appears in your mind, like it or not. It’s been successfully implanted by the advertisers.

In a general sense, the images and tropes that you are repeatedly exposed to will affect your subconscious mind in one way or another, like it or not. This is one clear reason to be careful about the images you regularly expose yourself to.


  • Because a never-ending stream of information can rob you of much-needed “silence”


The Norwegian explorer and philosopher Erling Kagge believes that one of the big problems with the world today is that the constant hum of information, entertainment, and communication, means that very few of us get as much “silence” as we need on a regular basis, to thrive.

According to Kagge’s view, this “silence” is necessary in order for us to maintain a calm level of equilibrium, come to terms with our own thoughts, and enjoy rich and fulfilling lives.

So, it’s clear that if you are constantly being bombarded with the latest headlines, social media updates, and more – and especially where those bits of information generate a strong emotional response in you – you will be missing out on a lot of “silence” and a lot of calm.


  • Because there are always multiple ways of looking at the world in various situations, and you will frequently tend to see more of what you are looking for



One famous psychological experiment involved having two teams pass a volleyball back-and-forth, while counting the number of times they passed the ball.

In the middle of the experiment, a man in a gorilla costume stepped in between the two teams and hung around for a while before wandering off.

Amazingly, many of the participants hadn’t even noticed the man in the gorilla suit when quizzed later.

This is clear evidence that we are amazingly adept at filtering out or noticing different information in our environments, depending on what we decide to pay attention to. So, the kind of information you train yourself to think of and notice will also tend to reflect what you see more of in the world around you.
