How to choose a front door for your home
Home improvement company, CSM North East share their tips on choosing how to choose a front door for your home.
If you’re thinking about getting a new front door, you should know that things may get a little complicated. Front doors are essential parts of any home, as they are meant to offer security, as well as energy efficiency. As such, you can’t go with the first type of door you find on the market.
But how to choose a front door? If you don’t know what to take into consideration, here’s a guide that will help you.
- Think About a Material
The material is relevant when choosing a new front door because the different types of materials offer certain levels of security, as well as different aspects. Therefore, you must be aware of the available options, such as:
- Steel – Steel doors are very popular nowadays because of their durability and security, and they represent the least expensive option too. Although they are durable, they are still vulnerable to dents and they could also rust.
- Fiberglass and composite – These doors look very similar to wood doors, but they are different. They are tougher and durable enough. Furthermore, they are very beautiful, so they will enhance your home design.
- Aluminum – Compared to the other door materials, this one is pretty new. It has the advantage that it won’t rust and doesn’t need repainting either. However, it can dent in time.
- Wood – Wood is probably the type of door material you’ve come across the most. You can paint these doors however you want. Still, you need to add some protection to it if you want it to last longer.
- Look at the Price Tag
Most of the time, people think about how much something is going to cost, and how that reflects the quality.
When it comes to doors, whereas a cheaper option sounds good at first, it comes with a lot of drawbacks, as it might not be durable and secure enough. You want something made of high-quality materials and with good insulation. Therefore, you could go for something pricier, and you will not regret it.
- Consider the Design
Depending on how your house looks, you may want to choose a door with a certain design. When you search among the available design options, you should also take into consideration the age of the property and the home’s façade.
- Make Sure It’s Secure
When you choose a new door, you must know whether it’s able to keep you safe from outside dangers. To determine this, you need to knock on them. Hollow doors echo, while solid ones sound “dead”. Also, make sure you check the locks and see if you can add any extra locks for security reasons.
- Don’t Overlook the Size
The size shouldn’t be taken for granted, as doors come in many sizes, and you should avoid buying one that doesn’t fit. Measure the entryway and the door gap before you go shopping and communicate the measurements to the door specialist. This is how you can get the perfect door.
When you think about how to choose a front door, there are various factors you need to take into consideration. We’ve presented some of the most important tips above, so now it should be much easier to choose a beautiful and secure front door.

I would have never have thought about having a steel door. We have a UPVC door. I think that’s what it’s called a white plastic one. I think they are the most common here. x
