Is using drugs or supplements for weight loss effective?

As per the World Health Organization, in 2016, 1.9 Billion people worldwide suffered from being overweight. Among them, 650 Million were obese. The number has increased now. The official site of WHO describes Obesity as “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese. The issue has grown to epidemic proportions, with over 4 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese in 2017 according to the global burden of disease.”

People are reluctantly looking for an effective solution to Obesity. While there are supplements and drugs for weight loss, people are unsure whether they are effective. So, through this article, you will understand various aspects of Obesity, overweight, and supplements for it.

Weight loss supplements

You might have seen advertisements of supplements guaranteeing weight loss in a particular number of days or months. Well, they are weight loss supplements or drugs. They can be of any form, gummies, pills, tonic, powders, and teas. These supplements claim to reduce your weight without exercising and a balanced diet.

Some weight loss supplements are top-rated, such as Okinawa flat belly tonic or Java Burn. The market value of weight-loss drugs and supplements was $6.5 billion in 2020. Do they work? While there are exceptions, most supplements do not help weight loss.

Are Supplements Effective?

Like you, researchers are also curious about the effectiveness of weight loss supplements. There is a continuous tussle between the researchers who believe in weight loss supplements and those who do not. Here are some of the studies on the effectiveness of supplements.

  • Researchers critically analyzed 315 already existing clinical trials of weight loss supplements, drugs, and other alternative therapies in a study. They concluded that the results of most clinical trials were biased. Here are things to know about the study.
  • From 315 studies, only 16 successfully concluded weight loss ( ranging between 1 pound to 11 pounds ) in participants. Besides, weight loss was inconsistent.
  • Researchers primarily reviewed 12 different ingredients. They are:
    • Calcium and Vitamin D
    • Chitosan
    • Chocolate/Cocoa
    • Chromium
    • Ephedra or Caffeine
    • Garcinia and Hydroxycitrate
    • Green tea
    • Guar gum
    • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
    • Phaseolus
    • Phenylpropylamine
    • Pyruvate

These are some common ingredients of weight loss supplements. Researchers also analyzed non-supplement techniques, such as mind-body interventions ( meditation and mindfulness) and acupuncture. Some opinions from the studies are:

  • According to Sharon Zarabi, program director in Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health in Westchester and New York City, the study results were not surprising: “obesity is a very complex disease, and there will never be a magic pill to cure it.”
  • Some well-known effective supplements are Exipure, Dentitox Pro, and Biofit. However, you have to work on your lifestyle to get full benefits. Sharon adds, “Even if there was a supplement, ingredient, herb, tincture, etc., that would work, supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Understanding the manufacturing practices, degree of active ingredients versus fillers, dose, quality, and efficacy, will be impossible to formulate,”
  • She further explains that only consuming a particular kind of supplement, such as Ginseng or pill, would not work. To make it work, you have to actively adapt to a healthy lifestyle and overcome your body’s natural tendency of defending weight loss.
  • Researchers in Australia became inspired by the previous study. They organized a global review of dietary and herbal supplements. They examined 121 trials, including 10,000 participants.

The research concluded that these pills do not give a significant clinical weight loss, more than 5.5 pounds or 2.5 Kilograms. The researchers believe that more research is necessary for the field.

So are these supplements waste? Is there any benefit? Well, you will learn it in subsequent sections.

Benefits of Weight Loss Supplements

Before thoroughly understanding the benefits of these weight loss supplements, it is vital to know the causes of overweight or Obesity.

According to the official site of WHO, the primary reason behind overweight and Obesity in an individual is an energy imbalance between calories used and consumed.

The site mentions two global causes of Obesity and overweight. They are:

  • Increased consumption of food full of energy, sugar, and fat.
  • The reduction in individuals’ physical activity because of changing nature of work, the introduction of comfortable transportation modes, and rapid urbanization.

Being overweight and obese has several consequences. They are:

  • Cardiovascular Diseases, mainly stroke and heart diseases). In 2012, it emerged as the leading cause of death.
  • Diabetes
  • Musculoskeletal disorders ( Particularly Osteoarthritis – a degenerative solid disabling joint disease).
  • Some kinds of cancers, particularly ovarian, kidney, breast, colon, endometrial, prostate, liver, and gallbladder.)

Talking about Obesity in childhood, WHO mentions on its official site that, “Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of Obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to increased future risks, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension, early markers of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological effects.”

So, how do supplements help? Here are some of the ways:

  • They Encourage Metabolic Rate

Weight loss becomes manageable when your body actively digests food. With fast metabolism, your body will burn calories faster.

  • They Reduce Craving

Supplements, such as Jave Burn and Okinawa flat belly tonic, might also help with reducing craving.

  • They Give You Energy

Weight loss supplements require an improved lifestyle to work. Thus, these supplements provide energy for better performance while exercising.

In these ways, supplements might affect you. Besides supplements, there are certain herbs popular for weight loss. One such herb is Kratom.

Can Kratom Support Weight Loss?

Most of Kratom’s functions are because of two famous alkaloids in it. They are 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine. Kratom does not directly support weight loss. Instead, its effect might result in weight loss.

For instance, most researchers believe that Kratom makes you energetic. That means your body will become active during workout sessions, or you might feel more motivated to do exercise. Some suggested Kratom strains for weight loss are maeng da and Thai. Kratom is legal in most parts worldwide. So, you can consume this herb and follow a healthy lifestyle for weight loss.

The question of the effectiveness of weight loss supplements is controversial. While there are supplements, such as Exipure, Dentinox Pro, and Biofit, which have gained public trust, there are supplements that might not affect you at all. So, you can experience different products and see what works for you.
