When we come to terms with the death of a loved one, what’s important is that we honour their memories in the right way. After someone has passed away, the sensation of grief can make us feel powerless, even if enough time has passed. But this is why honouring the life of a loved one is something that doesn’t just commemorate the person, but it helps us as part of the mourning process. There are many different ways to do this. Let’s show you some methods that you could try out.

Visit Their Resting Place Outside of the Funeral

This is something that we could all do as a regular practice. Choosing gravestones as memorials is one thing, but we must remember that if we are to commemorate somebody we can create a tradition around visiting a resting place. Choosing to go weekly, monthly or annually is such a simple thing, but when you go there, you’ve got to take the opportunity to sit and remember. You may even want to talk to them. This could be something that the entire family could do, and this can be a very simple practice that can help you as the months and years go by.

Keeping Something of Theirs With You

If you want to have something of theirs as a tribute to them, you can wear a piece of jewellery or an item of clothing. That way, it means they are with you always. You could also create jewellery with something that belongs to them, for example, their ashes or even their hair, and there are services that can provide this

Completing Their Unfinished Business

There may be things they didn’t get to do or to see, and an amazing way to give a heartfelt tribute to them will help celebrate the richness of their life. They made a unique contribution to the world, and when you start to understand what their sense of purpose was, completing a project for them is an amazing gift that commemorates their memories.

A Memorial Release

Many people find that a memorial release can be a fantastic way to honour someone’s memory, while also helping to heal. Some people release items like balloons, while others opt for butterflies. If you want to keep it simple, you could sprinkle some of their remains into a balloon and let that single balloon go. When performing any form of memorial service you’ve got to recognise that letting go of this object is about commemorating them, but also about letting some of your grief go.

We can all feel that grief is overwhelming at times. It can stop us in our tracks and it can make us feel immobile to the world around us, especially if grief is a new emotion for you. What we have to remember about memorialising someone’s life is that we honour who they are. You’ve got to remember that if you’ve lost someone, they wouldn’t want you to stay wallowing in grief. As much as we cannot control the grieving process, we must recognise that when you celebrate the life of someone, it’s partly a great way to help us commemorate their memory and also ensure that we take those positive steps in the right direction.
