Things to Do When You Feel Tired All the Time

Some days tiredness makes sense. You’ve had a late night, a busy week, or too much on your plate.

But what about when you’re tired all the time?

Not just physically tired. The sort of tired that follows you around. The kind that makes simple tasks feel harder than they should. The tiredness that a good night’s sleep doesn’t seem to fix.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Here are 11 gentle things to try when exhaustion becomes your unwanted companion.

1. Stop Calling Yourself Lazy

Let’s start here.

Many women spend far too much time criticising themselves for being tired.

Tired is not lazy.

You might be carrying work stress, caring responsibilities, financial worries, health issues, family concerns or emotional burdens that nobody else can see.

Show yourself the same kindness you’d offer a friend.

2. Check the Basics

When did you last drink a glass of water?

What have you eaten today?

Have you moved your body at all?

Sometimes the simplest things are the first to slip when we’re overwhelmed.

Think of the basics as your foundations.

3. Get Outside for Ten Minutes

Not an hour.

Not a five-mile walk.

Just ten minutes.

Fresh air, daylight and a change of scenery can work wonders when you feel stuck in a cycle of fatigue.

4. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Rest and quitting are not the same thing.

Sometimes we keep pushing because we feel guilty about stopping.

Yet ignoring exhaustion rarely makes it disappear.

A short nap, an early night or an evening on the sofa might be exactly what your body needs.

5. Reduce Your To-Do List

When we’re tired, a list of twenty tasks can feel impossible.

Choose three priorities.

Just three.

Getting a few important things done is far better than feeling overwhelmed by everything.

6. Speak to Someone

Tiredness often has emotional roots as well as physical ones.

Talking to a trusted friend, family member or colleague can lighten the mental load.

You don’t always need solutions.

Sometimes you just need someone to listen.

7. Notice What’s Draining You

Not all tiredness comes from doing too much.

Sometimes it comes from doing too much of the wrong things.

A difficult relationship.

A stressful workplace.

Constant worry.

Unrealistic expectations.

Understanding what’s draining your energy is often the first step towards protecting it.

8. Stop Scrolling

I know. Easier said than done.

But mindlessly scrolling when we’re exhausted can leave us feeling even worse.

Instead, try reading, listening to music, watching a favourite programme or simply sitting quietly with a cuppa.

9. Get Things Out of Your Head

A racing mind can be exhausting.

Keep a notebook nearby and write everything down.

Worries.

Reminders.

Ideas.

Things you need to remember tomorrow.

Sometimes the brain rests better when it knows it doesn’t have to hold onto everything.

10. Consider Whether Your Body is Trying to Tell You Something

Persistent tiredness isn’t something to ignore.

If you’re feeling exhausted for weeks or months, speak to a healthcare professional.

There could be an underlying cause that’s worth investigating.

You deserve support, not just survival.

11. Celebrate What You Did Do Today

When we’re tired, it’s easy to focus on what didn’t get done.

Instead, ask yourself:

What did I achieve today?

Maybe you worked.

Maybe you cared for someone.

Maybe you made an important phone call.

Maybe you simply got through a difficult day.

That counts.

Final Thoughts

If you’re feeling tired all the time, please remember this:

You do not have to earn rest.

You do not have to wait until you are completely exhausted before looking after yourself.

And you certainly do not have to have everything figured out.

Be gentle with yourself. Life has seasons. Some are for striving and some are for recovering.

If you’re in a tired season right now, perhaps your job isn’t to do more.

Perhaps it’s simply to take care of yourself while you find your energy again.
