Using lamps to create mood lighting for the perfect living room

A living room flooded by natural daylight feels warm and the shadows cast by the sun make for a sense of drama that artificial light simply can’t replicate. Using a combination of lamps after dark, however, as opposed to the main ceiling light in the room, can make for a relaxing stage for the evenings proceedings. Here are some tips for how to create the perfect mood lighting for your living room.

Dimmer Switches

If the main light in the living room is to be used to create a relaxing mood, then it needs to be used in combination with a dimmer switch. Turn the dimmer switch down low and you will achieve a wash of low light, but this can lack the dynamics that can be achieved by introducing more light from some stylish lamps that are placed strategically around the space.

Floor Lamps

With a wide range of sizes and styles to choose from, floor lamps make for a great way in which to light a living space and provide a sense of warmth and comfort. Generally speaking, floor lamps are positioned behind or to the side of any seating that may be in the space – the corner of a room is the perfect spot.

The choice of shade used on the lamp and the bulb wattage will dictate the volume and strength of the light that it gives off and this is worth bearing in mind, particularly if the lamp is to close to a reading chair.

For a contemporary look consider brass or copper floor lamps, but for a more traditional approach perhaps a wooden lamp with a shade made from fabric is a better choice.

Table Lamps

Table lamps can also play an important role in getting the ambiance for a living room just right. Popular choices include lamps with ceramic bases and also lamps with adjustable arms, so that you can get the angle of the light coming from them positioned more easily.

In terms of where to put them, a table lamp can be placed on top of a set of drawers, on shelves or, of course a table – the higher the lamp is positioned the more light you will get from it.

The time we spend in our living rooms is special, it is a time for relaxing and sharing moments with our loved ones and creating the perfect mood with lighting will enhance this time all the more – with the right floor and table lamps you will be able to create the right mood in style.

Lamps really do add the right ambiance! We have an overabundance of lamps at our house because we don’t like overhead lighting.
