Once you turn 25 or so, each New Year brings the scary thought that you’re turning into an old lady. But the fact is that aging is inevitable. As long as you’re alive, your body will age, but there are things you can do to keep yourself looking and feeling like you’re still in your prime. This guide will help you age gracefully.

Take Care of Your Skin

When people talk about looking younger, they’re typically talking about having tight and wrinkle-free skin. You’ve heard before that you need to wash your face and keep your skin moisturized to stop your skin from sagging, but there’s so much more you can do. The first thing is to start on the inside. A clean diet that’s full of healthy fats, vitamins A and E, and lots of water is the perfect recipe to give you glowing skin. You’ll also want to find ways to incorporate more activity into your day so that blood is constantly nourishing your skin cells. Also, try to avoid smoking and heavy drinking because these habits can make your skin dry and create premature wrinkles that make you look older.Cutting out negative substances is key to aging gracefully.

You’ll also want to keep your skin protected from the harmful rays of the sun, which can cause wrinkles, moles, and leathery skin. Always wear sunscreen when you leave the house, even when it’s cold and cloudy, to help protect your skin from aging prematurely. On the same note, make a habit out of wearing sunglasses every time you step outside, which not only protects your eyes, but the skin around your eyes as well to prevent crow’s feet. Additionally, look for foods that are high in antioxidants, as these vitamins can naturally prevent some of this skin damage.

You should also invest in finding skincare products that are suited for your specific skin type. This might require a little trial and error since there are so many products on the market to choose from. To start, find a face wash and moisturizer that you can use daily along with an exfoliator you can use at least once a week to keep your skin clean and healthy. If you’re having trouble finding specific products to use, you can always go to a dermatologist and get a professional recommendation for what you should be using. Mastering a skincare routine can be a little daunting, and definitely requires some time and research, but your skin will thank you in the end.

Develop a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet does more than give you younger-looking skin; it also keeps your insides young as well. As you age, your immune system weakens, your bones become less dense, and your insulin production decreases. However, all of these effects can be offset or slowed by eating a healthy diet. You can prevent your body from becoming insulin resistant by reducing the amount of sugar you consume, which decreases your chances of getting diabetes. The calcium you get from dairy and other sources will keep your bones strong, which lower your chance of breaking them in the future. Multiple studies have shown that a diet full of fruits and vegetables gives your immune system the boost it needs to fight off infectious diseases. A well-balanced diet goes a long way in making your body function at its best. Looking youthful on the outside is only attainable if your time and attention is spent caring for your internal organs as well.

Many of us know all too well that it’s easier to gain weight the older we get. A slower metabolism, reduction in muscle mass, and hormone changes lead to your body retaining more body fat, specifically in the belly region, which can lead to health issues in the future. It’s important to start eating healthily as early as possible to help prevent some of this weight gain. If you’ve already noticed that you’ve gained a significant amount of weight, try to find a healthy weight loss program that rewards lifestyle changes. Even if you’re not too concerned about the number that’s on the scale, it’s worth having the peace of mind knowing that the food you’re putting in your body is helping you in more ways than one.

Start a Fitness Routine for aging gracefully

You’ve probably been told a million times that exercise is good for the body, but it’s equally as important for keeping both your mind and your body young and healthy. An active lifestyle slows down the loss of muscle mass and keeps your blood flowing. Stretch regularly or start going to a yoga class to keep your body strong and flexible. For best results, add a cardio class to your schedule to keep your heart and lungs healthy and to keep your blood flowing. If you’d rather work out from the comfort of your own home, there are plenty of free apps, YouTube videos, and fitness blogs for you to find workout routines that you enjoy.

Remember that you’ll also want to incorporate some sort of strength training into your routine. If you only focus on doing cardio exercises, you might actually lose some of the muscle that you’re working so hard to keep. Whether you’re using dumbells or you’re relying on just your body weight, strength training exercises are going to help shape your body, and can at the very least stop you from losing your strength as you age.

Take Care of Your Entire Body

While most people are concerned with looking older, it’s also important to remember that there are many parts of your body that are changing, so you want to make sure that everything is functioning the way that it should be. Schedule regular doctor’s visits so that if something is wrong it can be caught early, and don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions about your concerns. Also, take the time to go to the eye doctor and dentist more often than you used to, and invest more time into your oral health, since your vision and teeth tend to become impaired over the years. Mindful aging means learning to accept both the fun and the not so fun things that come with getting older. Whether it’s choosing to love the beautiful shade of gray that your hair is turning or marveling at how the new generation has such a different childhood than the one you had, aging mindfully lets you live in the present and creates awareness around your ever-changing body, as well as how the world is constantly changing around you.
