There are many ways to establish order and discipline in the classroom. Some methods are more effective than others, but no one has managed to find one universal way yet, that would be equally reliable in all cases. Therefore, a novice teacher should always act depending on the circumstances. If the chosen approach does not solve the problem, they need to resort to another, use the third one – until an effective solution to all classroom challenges is found. But the teacher must be realistic and understand that, no matter how hard he tries at times, one cannot be insured against certain failures.
The recommended tips for dealing with problems at school have been tested in the practice of many teachers. These methods are evaluated ambiguously. We will try to examine them for the effectiveness of the treatment, judging by the experience of a large number of novice teachers.
1. One-on-one chat
This is the most effective method of resolving issues of discipline and various problem situations in general. Sincere, frank conversation can convince a student that he/she is a personality for the teacher and they can try to solve the arisen problem together. A face-to-face conversation encourages the student to cooperate more: in such a situation, you do not need to fear for your dignity in front of the classmates and attract their attention.
2. Condemning remarks
This is one of the most frequently used methods of dealing with such minor violations of discipline as whispering, talking, inattentiveness. Censure is usually enough to restore order. Truthfully, this is not always the solution for inveterate offenders of the discipline, and therefore it is necessary to apply steeper measures of influence them. The effectiveness of the blaming comment depends on the individuality of each pupil. Some students do their best to avoid teacher’s disapproval. Others, in response to the comments, are not going to keep a discipline, and, therefore, the teacher has to think about some other, additional measures that can restore proper order in the classroom.
3. Sarcastic tone
The method of blaming remarks is quite acceptable for restoring order, which cannot be said about sarcastic tone. Censure expresses simple disapproval of a student’s deed by the teacher. But the sarcastic tone, stinging judgments lower the self-esteem of the schoolchildren. It is possible that a sarcastic remark will cause the pupil to calm down. But it will also cause their inner emotional protest and resentment, which can be a source of more serious problems in the relationship. By making such comments, the teacher runs the risk of losing the respect of the students. Since nothing positive can be achieved with a sarcastic tone, it should be decisively avoided.
4. Frequent survey
By asking questions about the lesson material to a teen who is distinguished by talkativeness and inattention, you can quickly achieve the desired result – wean him from the inclinations of this kind. Such a kid discovers very soon that with undisciplined behavior he has to answer the teacher’s questions more often, and an academic essay writing service doesn’t help to bring the papers on time. As a result, the pupil begins to control his behavior in the classroom, becoming more attentive.
5. Consultation with parents
Sometimes this or that problem of discipline can be resolved quite simply, one has only to threaten the student by calling his parents to school. The effectiveness of this technique depends on how high the authority of the parents is in the eyes of the child. In many occasions, parents do not even suspect their children may violate a discipline. This is especially true for those who do not want to meet with the teacher and do not attend parent meetings. Consultations with parents are useful both for themselves and for the teacher. Parents get a real understanding of school affairs and the child’s behavior, while the teacher gets the information he needs to better understand the problems of a particular child. After exchanging information, both parties may come to a mutual agreement regarding specific forms of parental assistance to the teacher. A schoolchild who is aware of the close cooperation of parents and teachers becomes, as a rule, more agreeable.
Teens tend to be one of the gang and recognized by each other. Physical or psychological isolation from a group (class) is a very effective measure of pedagogical influence on offenders of a discipline.
With physical isolation, the student is usually seated separately somewhere in the back row, from where it will be much harder for him to attract the attention of his classmates. It is useful to explain to schoolchildren that their comrades were isolated for the reason that it interferes with practicing the entire class, but as soon as the offender shows readiness to maintain discipline, he will receive permission to rejoin the class.
In cases when two or more students sitting next to each other are clearly competing for discipline violations, they must be immediately seated separately.
7. Public apology
There is no greater humiliation for a student than to face the class and publicly repent of an unseemly act. From the point of view of the relationship of the teacher with the schoolchildren, such an apology does not bring any benefit. Grieving in the soul of the kid resentment does not encourage him to study. Perhaps only in one case, a public apology can somehow be justified: in a situation where a student insulted the entire class.
