Practicing Self-Love: 10 Ways to Be Kinder to Yourself as You Age

Everyone ages; it’s an inevitable part of life. Of course, many of us forget to take care of ourselves as we grow older. That can cause us to age more rapidly than we should and greatly detract from our quality of life. It’s important to remember to treat yourself a bit more gently as the years pass so you can live a longer, healthier life. Keep the following thoughts in mind as you forge through the days to help you be kinder to yourself.

1) Take Time for Yourself

Long before you begin thinking about assisted living apartments or in-home nurses, start setting aside a little time for yourself each day. Get up a few minutes earlier so you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee in silence. Sneak away from the chaos of the evenings for a few moments to sequester yourself in a quiet room. Those few minutes each day can make a world of difference in your physical and emotional health.

2) Enjoy a Hot Bubble Bath

Studies show that taking a nice, hot bath provides several health benefits. It burns calories, relieves stress, fosters healing, brings down your blood pressure, and boosts your immunity. Besides, it’s a great way to relax and enjoy the alone time you need.

3) Put Down Your Phone

These days, the average person spends about five hours per day on his or her phone. By some accounts, that could amount to a total of more than nine years over the course of a lifetime. Staring at a phone strains your eyes, exposes you to copious amounts of unnecessary drama, and fills your heart with bad news. Though it’s nice to keep up with the world and stay in touch with friends and relatives, don’t be reluctant to set the phone aside for a while every day. It’ll still be there when you’re ready to pick it up again.

4) Take Those Vacation Days

Few people go to their graves saying they wish they’d spent more time at work. Use your vacation days for what they were intended: travel, rest, fun, and relaxation. You’ll feel better for doing so.

5) Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

Getting pampered works wonders for the heart, mind, and body. Get your nails done. Have a pedicure and a facial. Enjoy a soothing hot stone massage. Whatever spa activities you enjoy are yours for the taking.

6) Smile and Laugh

Smiling and laughing is good for the soul. At the same time, laughing can improve your lung health, get your heart pumping, and stimulate your muscles. Enjoying life is healthy from every angle.

7) Get More Sleep

There’s no end to the potential advantages of getting a little more sleep each night. It’ll help improve your state of mind and slow down the aging process. Getting plenty of rest will also help you ward off illnesses.

8) Get Rid of Clutter

Clutter can have a serious negative impact on your physical health and emotional well-being. Getting rid of it has the opposite effect. It’ll make you feel freer and happier while giving you more room to move.

9) Be Selfish on Occasion

You’re only one person. You can’t make everyone happy all the time, and you certainly can’t do everything that needs to be done in a single day. Tell people no sometimes, and learn to ask for help or let go of the things you just can’t handle on your own.

10) Don’t Dwell on the Past

Life is far too short to dwell on the past. Things happen, and people make mistakes. It’s part of life, and it helps us to grow and evolve. Put the past behind you. Live for today and plan for tomorrow.
