Whenever the term “midlife crisis” is mentioned, our thoughts automatically turn to men. Throughout the years across multiple media formats, men are presented as the ones who have a midlife crisis. It’s shown as a man in his 40s or 50s struggling to deal with the concept of getting older. They buy flashy cars or take up silly hobbies to try and fill the void. We won’t deny that men do go through this experience, but what about women?

The fact that midlife crises in women aren’t openly talked about makes you assume the two don’t go together. That’s all the more damaging when you’re a woman entering the middle of your life and feeling stuck. You think something must be wrong as women aren’t talked about as going through a midlife crisis. In reality, this can happen to anyone – regardless of gender – and is a fairly natural reaction to, well, getting older.

As you cross 30 and get closer to 40, your perspectives can change. You start looking back on your life rather than looking ahead, questioning all your decisions. It’s easy to start worrying about your life and thinking that you’ve not accomplished much. These feelings are even more pronounced as a single woman going through a midlife crisis. You feel the sands of time running out and this traps you in a rut.

Thankfully, you can get out of your rut and break through this mini-crisis. It doesn’t have to be a moment of fear, but one of rebirth. Approach your midlife crisis from the perspective that this is a time to shape who you are and feel better about yourself. We all respond to things differently, though the ideas below are good general tips for single women going through a midlife crisis:

Get Back On The Dating Scene

As a single woman in her 30s or 40s, you feel like your dating days are over. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! There’s no age limit on dating; you can get back out there whenever you like. A lot of women struggle to comprehend this as their only experiences with dating are as a teenagers or when they were in their twenties. Some of you may have had long relationships that spanned nearly a decade, so now you’re back single. In fact, breakups are often what trigger midlife crises in women.

Instead of moping around and feeling sorry for yourself, get back out there! Use dating apps or attend speed dating events to find people in the same boat as you. Both of these options will let you find people in your age bracket, so there’s no fear of being “too old” to date. You don’t even need a relationship to feel good again – sometimes, simply getting some attention and knowing that people find you attractive is enough to help you climb out of your rut.

Start Working Out

Body image is always a big problem for women, especially when you get to a certain age. It’s ludicrous that we’ve been conditioned to think about our bodies in a specific way since we were young. The media is to blame for this as it’s bashed so many women’s confidence across generations.

When you’re having a midlife crisis, you start to look badly at your body. You hate the way it looks and pine for the days when you were more youthful and taut. There’s no problem with how you look – as long as you feel confident and healthy.

That’s why working out can be so helpful in this situation. It’s not so much about how you look, but rather how working out makes you feel. You notice changes in your body, you feel stronger and it gives you a huge confidence boost. Working out will show you your true capabilities and prove to yourself that you can be strong and sexy. It does wonders for your self-esteem and also gives you a sense of purpose. Your workout routine provides structure to your life that might be missing at this stage.

Also, from a single woman’s perspective, going to the gym or a health club helps you meet new people. You could find the person you spend the rest of your life with while walking on the treadmill!

Treat Your Body Right By Eating Healthily

Again, a lot of women go through body image problems during a midlife crisis. This is more prevalent if you’ve given birth and spent the last 10 or 15 years being a mother. It’s easy to forget about caring for yourself when you have so many other obligations in life.

The older you get, the more you worry about health complications too. That’s why eating healthily is a wonderful way to tackle your problems. Consuming whole foods and following a balanced diet will treat your body right. You’ll feel so much better about yourself as you’re getting all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need to be a healthy human. Your hair looks better, your nails are stronger and even your skin can appear more radiant.

Healthy eating changes you inside and out, which helps you get out of your rut and fight through this midlife crisis.

Reflect On Your Career

For some, a midlife crisis stems from career problems. This is particularly true for single women at this stage in their lives. As mentioned before, you may have been in a long-term relationship and you might’ve spent most of that time being a mother. Consequently, you didn’t have time to forge a career, meaning you’re now 40 and don’t have a job.

This doesn’t have to be a bad thing! Think of this as the start of a new career path. Even if you have a job, reflect on it and consider if it’s holding you back. Now’s the perfect time to follow your passion and do something you love. Sometimes, this gets you out of your funk and helps you enjoy the second half of your life.

Two big things you should take from this article are that women can go through a midlife crisis and there’s nothing wrong with this! It’s completely natural, but you shouldn’t let it hold you down. There’s still so much more to accomplish in life – the fun begins when you enter your middle years.
