Free mental health support for you

Here are some helpful suggestions if you are looking for mental health support.. They are there for you when you are struggling with mental health issues or care about someone who is ill. Let’s just establish loud and clear that mental health issues are just like any other health issue in that they are not the sufferer’s fault. They are either a response to external events or a change in all the chemical malarkey in the brain or quite possibly a mix of the two.

MIND – I remember as a child mum used to tell me some of our neighbours struggled with mental health issues and a few were hospitalized. Interestingly, she never spoke so openly when she was having troubles of her own with an abject fear of going out. I also remember her taking me to a MIND café probably because I think there was a charity shop attached. Anyway, I digress and MIND has gone from strength to strength with a handy A-Z of mental health  issues, information and local support.

Mental health support for children and young people

YOUNG MINDS – I first heard of Young Minds when my daughter was struggling in school due to bullies amongst the pupils but also the Head Teacher. I was looking into home education, joined some forums and someone pointed me to the Young Minds charity. Vitally they have a Parents Helpline because  there is no worse feeling in the world than worrying your child is going to harm themselves or someone help is already hurting them. They have national and more localised projects including ones on self-harm and solid support in working with schools to build pupil resilience.

HEADS TOGETHER – At first I was cynical when I heard about Head Together thinking it was just a clever PR stunt for the Royal Family.  It seemed to take a while to get off the ground properly. However, it would take a very hard heart not to be impressed by Prince Harry talking about his own mental health struggles following the loss of his mother. It really is #OKtosay that all is not well as their conversation films demonstrate so well.

SANE provides support in a number of ways but I am particularly impressed that they have a forum and also a text care scheme so you can get back up to your phone just when you need it.

CARERS UK is the one-stop shop for any carer looking for information, advice or products that might help their situation.

Depression and anxiety disorders are common mental disorders yet often don’t feel that way when we are struggling with them and feel so alone. More than 300 million people suffer from depression and 260 million are living with anxiety.

Mental health in the workplace is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2017. World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilizing efforts in support of better mental health.

    thank you for the list of resources – really good to know there is so much support available if you know where to look. It’s wonderful that so many people are starting to open up much more about mental health too, it really is so important to embrace this and support those that need help (which is the vast majority i think!)

    This is good to see – some years back a close family member was really struggling with mental help and it was beyond difficult to access support. Glad to see things have moved forward.

    It’s nice to see there is some support for carers too. Having a husband with depression can be quite isolating at times so these resources may be something I look into. Thank you for sharing. #coolmumclub

    This is such a useful resource and I actually haven’t heard of many of these organisations. There does seem to be a much better awareness and acceptance of mental health conditions now, but it can still be so difficult to know where to turn if it’s effecting you or someone you care for.     Thank you for sharing this. I didn’t realise there was so much support out there. It seems like many people are starting to understand the importance of mental health now but there is still a long way to go. It’s one thing accepting you need support and it’s another thing trying to find it!
